Preparing for breast augmentation doesn't have to be a stressful if you do a little planning. Careful preparation is the best way to reduce stress and make sure everything goes smoothly. If you get the little things out of the way, you can use your recovery period as a time to relax and look forward to your new appearance.

The day of your breast augmentation surgery

• Don't eat or drink anything after midnight the day beforehand if your surgery is scheduled for the morning. If your surgery is scheduled for the afternoon, don't eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to surgery. This includes water, gum, mints, etc. Daily medications cleared by your doctor can usually be taken with a sip of water. Be sure not to swallow the water when you brush your teeth. Do not smoke or drink the day before surgery.

• Make sure your physician is aware of any medications, supplements, and herbs you are currently taking. Inform the nurses and the doctors of any allergies you may have.

• Don't wear moisturizers, creams, lotions or any type of makeup.

• Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. Take a pillow in the vehicle for comfort on the ride home. Have your favorite kind of crackers and something to drink to help if you experience nausea. Bring along a plastic bag in case you become sick.

Here are some important tips that can help in your recovery

• Have comfortable clothing ready for your recovery period, including loosely-fitting shirts that open in the front (avoid pull-over shirts). Sweat pants, pajama bottoms and other pull-on pants work well.

• Go shopping for groceries to make sure your home is well-stocked with food. Plan to eat small, frequent meals and avoid spicy or fried foods.

• Some patients take arnica supplements to reduce swelling and bruising.
